Because the part of our mind we name ‘the unconscious’ is so ancient and huge, we sometimes depict contact with it as a dragon or monster. Also: The untamed or unsocialised sexual drive which can overpower or trap a girl emerging into womanhood, or threatens a youth facing manhood. The overcoming of it means facing one’s fears of the vast power of such natural drives, and finding satisfying expression.
